Albert van Wyk :
Altermar Konstruksie
How did you get into your industry?
Carpentry is a hobby, and I began as a subcontractor, doing built-in cupboards, doors and all interior finishes for homes. My ambition drove me to undertake full contracts – small houses at first, then larger, sophisticated structures.
Where did you study to acquire the skills for your profession / trade?
Being on site all day with all the various trades is the best mentor anyone can wish for. This is where you encounter all of the pitfalls and discover how to overcome them. At the age of 65, I am still learning from everyone that I work with.
What is your biggest work related achievement?
My biggest achievement is to have established firstly, a name for myself as a reliable building contractor, and secondly a construction company that has recently celebrate 30 years with a reputation of striving to do the best possible for every client.
It is a wonderful feeling to meet people whose homes I built over 20 years ago and hear how happy they still are, or to have them refer their friends to me.
What are your goals for the growth and development of your business, or where do you see trends in your industry leading?
The high standards of workmanship to which we have adhered over the past 30 years will be our guidelines for the future. I think that the industry will continually demand higher quality in the years to come and only the best will survive the competitive environment.
